Powe leaves Celtics for Cavs
August 12, 2009
Former Celtics forward Leon Powe has agreed to a two-year contract for the league minimum salary with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Celtics did not make a qualifying offer to Powe, a restricted free agent, in June, but were considering re-signing him if he recovered from left knee surgery. Powe was injured in Game 2 of the Celtics-Bulls playoff series, and underwent an operation for a torn anterior cruciate ligament. It was the third time Powe has had major surgery on his left knee.
Powe began rehabilitating with Celtic trainers during the playoffs, then continued in Los Angeles. After the Celtics informed Powe they would not be making an offer in June, he began checking for interest from other teams. The Cleveland deal is pending medical evaluation of the progress of Powe’s recovery.
Powe produced some strong performances filling in for Kevin Garnett during the regular season, including a 30-point performance in a 102-92 win at Memphis in March. He sustained a right knee injury in a March 17 visit to Chicago, then returned for the final two games of the regular season.

A great veterans minimum signing that carries no risk for the Cavaliers. If this is a success however, it provides huge gains for the team. Powe isn't the most ideal option next to Shaq, but he's an efficient scorer who plays with a tremendous amount of intensity. He's managed to stay pretty healthy in the NBA up until the playoffs, and his knee is said to look ok. Hopefully he's able to stay healthy and make a big pay day in two years. If there's one guy that deserves it, it's him.
We'll most likely be adding him into the rotation in late February. Very excited for this move.
